George "Rufus" Walker has
been awarded Athlete of the Month for
March 2007 for his outstanding efforts
on the rugby pitch for the California Maritime
Academy.
A freshman from Seattle, Washington, Rufus
has made an immediate impact on the rugby
team. Walker is the starting 8-Man and
handles all the penalty and conversion
kicking responsibilities.
In the 4
games the Keelhaulers played in March, Rufus
led the team with 44 total points, 25 of
them coming in a stellar effort against San
Jose State University. Walker
converted on 18 tries for the month, giving
him a 70% success rate.
Defensively,
Walker helped fortify a strong Keelhauler
defense. Solid defensive efforts
helped the Keelhaulers secure their first
ever victory against league rival Santa Rosa
JC.
Bringing
several years of high school rugby
experience, Walker has elevated not only his
level of play, but also that of those around
him. The Keelhaulers finished the
regular season with a 7-5 overall record,
and look to build on the positive
experiences of this year.
Rufus is
currently studying mechanical engineering
here at Cal Maritime.
