Team Effort Leads Keelhaulers

January 10th, 2008

The Keelhaulers of the California Maritime Academy were victorious over the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay tonight by the score of 71-58 before an enthusiastic home crowd.

Maritime was led by Simon Heller's steller shooting performace as he netted 16 points on 4 of 7 from the three point line.  He was joined in double figures by Steve Barrera and Cody Gatton who each scored 12 points.  Andy Johnson continued his strong play at the point guard position with six assists and only two turnovers.

Cal State East Bay was led by Jawaan Rubin (13 points) and Melvin Fleming (12 points) as the Pioneers shot a blistering 47% from the three point line.  Rubin also had a strong overall floor game with five assists and five rebounds.

"Our players did an excellent job of trusting each other tonight both offensively and defensively.  This trust allowed us to play with confidence and beat a very talented team from Cal State East Bay," Head Coach Bryan Rooney commented after the win.

With the win, Maritime improves to 5-2 in the California Pacific Conference.  The Keelhaulers head into an important conference match-up on Saturday as they travel to Holy Names.  Holy Names entered tonight's contest against Menlo College in first place. Tip off in Oakland is scheduled for 4:00pm
