The California Maritime
Men's basketball team defeated the
Penguins of Dominican University, the
defending league champions, by a score
of 58-54. The victory is the second
conference win and takes the Keelhaulers
to a 5-4 record overall, 2-0 in Cal Pac
play.
Cal Maritime continued to
play solid basketball in the first half,
jumping out to an early lead over
Dominican. Tommy Kreta led the team in
the first half with 10 points, with the
team shooting 50% from the floor. It
was a stifling defense though that
proved to be the best weapon for the
Keelhaulers in the 1st half. The
Keelhaulers pressured Dominican well
forcing 10 turnovers and holding the
Penguins to 38% shooting from the
floor. Mikey Ferguson had 3 steals in
the half. The Keelhaulers took a
commanding lead into halftime with a
score of 33-20. The Penguins fought
back in the 2nd half, outscoring the
Keelhaulers 34-25, but the deficit at
half was too much to overcome, and Cal
Maritime was able to secure the win with
an emphatic blocked shot by Cal
Maritime's Cody Gatton as time was
running down. Praise Odo-Boms led all
scorers with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Tommy
Kreta continued to play solid basketball
with 14 points and 5 rebounds.
"It's great to see that
the team is learning how to play well on
the road. This is a good win for us,
and we look to take this momentum into
the new year" reported Head Coach Tim
Harrison.
Cal Maritime will travel
to Hayward, Ca. to participate in the
CSUEB Holiday Classic on the 29th and
30th of December against Malone
University and UC Santa Cruz. |
