Following
a tough road trip to southern
California, the California Maritime
Academy Keelhaulers (1-4) head to Maine
this coming weekend for a pair of games
in the inaugural Maritime Classic
Basketball Tournament. On Saturday, the
Keelhaulers face SUNY-Maritime (Throgs
Neck, NY) in a 3 PM match-up, while on
Sunday the Keelhaulers take on host
Maine Maritime at 2 PM.
Cal
Maritime will have the advantage of
having several games under its belt,
while its foes in the Maritime Classic
will be opening play this weekend. Cal
Maritime opened the season with a pair
of losses to nationally-ranked
opponents, San Diego Christian
University and Biola University, in the
Holy Names Tip-Off Classic. Sophomore
Craig Dull and junior Cody Gatton led
the Keelhaulers with 10 points apiece in
the 89-48 loss to San Diego Christian,
while sophomore Steve Barrera finished
with 13 and senior co-captain Tom Kreta
with 12 in Cal Maritime’s 74-53 loss to
Biola.
The
Keelhaulers rebounded with a 73-70 win
over Golden State Baptist (Santa Clara)
the following Tuesday night. Sophomore
Will Williams led the way with 23
points, including five three-pointers,
and Gatton chipped in with 20 and nine
rebounds, while senior Praise Odo-Boms
finished with 12 points and 11 boards.
This past
weekend, the Keelhaulers trekked to
southern California for two games. On
Friday night, the Maritime basketball
program continued its tradition of
taking on NCAA Division I foes. In past
years, Maritime has faced Northern
Arizona and Cal-Poly (San Luis Obispo);
this time the Keelhaulers met the Titans
of Cal-State Fullerton. While the final
score appeared lopsided (108-56), the
Keelhaulers never stopped competing but
lost out to superior height and full
scholarship-level athleticism. Williams
(19 points) and Gatton (14) again led
the way for Maritime.
Following
the Friday night game, the Keelhaulers
headed to Lancaster for a Saturday
afternoon tiff against West Coast
Baptist. Despite holding a slim lead at
the half, 27-25, the Keelhaulers ended
up on the wrong end of the 88-78 final
score. Williams finished with a
season-high 31 points, including 10 of
12 from the free-throw line, and Gatton
scored 12 and garnered 9 rebounds.
