Sunday
afternoon saw the California Maritime
Academy Keelhaulers travel to Atherton
to take on the first place Menlo Oaks.
Menlo entered the contest with an
unblemished 3-0 record. However,
this did not deter the Keelhaulers from
knocking off the Oaks by the score of
52-51 in a hard-fought contest.
While Cody
Gatton led the team with 15 points, it
was his last two that proved to be the
most important. With the
Keelhaulers down by one after Menlo's
Chris Cobb hit a clutch three pointer
with less than 20 seconds, Gatton
elevated for an offensive rebound and
put it back in with 3 seconds on the
clock. The Oaks last attempt at a
score missed wide as time expired.
"This is a
big win for our team for many reasons.
We were on the ropes when Cobb hit the
three. However, our team never
lost the belief that we would get it
done. I am very proud of our
effort and the fact that this was a
total team effort" commented Head Coach
Bryan Rooney.
Along with
leading the team in scoring, Gatton also
pulled down 6 rebounds. The Keelhaulers
also had three others in double figures.
John Stiles scored 11 points, Will
Williams had 12, and Andy Johnson had
10. Cesar Gerardo led the team with 5
assists.
For the
Oaks, Brandon Cochran scored 15 points
and grabbed 9 rebounds while Kyle Adams
earned 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 4
assists.
The
Keelhaulers are back in action on
December 28th in the friendly confines
at Morrow Cove. Tip off against
nationally ranked California Baptist
starts at 7:30pm.
