The California
Maritime Academy Keelhaulers fell just
short of upsetting Fresno Pacific
University on Tuesday night, losing
78-72.
Fresno Pacific
entered half time with a nine point
advantage and stretched the lead to as
many as eighteen with less than ten
minutes to go. However, a
determined effort brought Maritime
within four with under a minute to play.
The Keelhaulers had an open three
pointer, which would have cut the
deficit to one with fifteen seconds to
play, glance off the back rim.
Fresno Pacific corraled the rebound,
made two free throws, and escaped with a
hard fought victory.
Adrian Sanchez
led Fresno Pacific with twenty-six
points, making six of ten from three
point range. Adrian Hurtado, Andre
Davis, and Todd Brown also scored in
double figures for the Sunbirds.
Cody Gatton had a
monster game for the Keelhaulers
finishing with twenty-five points and
eleven rebounds. Andy Johnson
played his best game in a Keelhauler
uniform scoring fifteen points on five
of nine shooting. Cesar Gerardo
also reached double figures in scoring
with eleven points. Will Williams
led the team with six assists.
Coach Rooney
commented on the effort of the
Keelhaulers stating, "I am extremely
proud of our effort tonight. We
had several chances to give-in but our
players kept fighting against a
well-coached basketball team in Fresno
Pacific."
The Keelhaulers
are back in action Friday night as they
travel across the country to play in the
Maritime Cup held in Throggs Neck, New
York. Tip off against the Coast
Guard Academy is set for 6pm east coast
time.
