Cal Maritime Water Polo

Pasadena, CA:  Cal Maritime struck out today at the Cal Tech Classic, dropping all three of its games.  In the first game of the day, CMA put up a good fight while facing the University of La Verne, one of the top teams in the NCAA Division III.  The Keelhaulers went back and forth with La Verne, trailing by one at half (5-4), and by three at the end of the third (8-5).  Unfortunately, Maritime ran out of steam in the fourth, and ULV ended the game with a score of 16-7.   Adron Beene and Phil Spann had two goals each, and Nic Beene, Joe Mahach, and Bryan Zitren contributed one each for the Keelhaulers.  Goalie Blake Amon played another strong game for CMA, finishing with 12 saves.

The Keelhaulers looked to redeem themselves in the third game, facing arch-rival St Mary’s in the third game of the day.  The game was close throughout, neither team managing to pull away.  St Mary’s led 4-3 at half, and 7-5 after the third quarter.  Maritime cut it to 7-6 in the fourth on a goal by Sr Cole Van Gundy, but even though CMA held St Mary’s scoreless in the fourth, they were unable to even the score, dropping a 7-6 decision.  Cole Van Gundy had three goals, and Peter Gillette, Adron Beene, and Jeff Balistreri scored one each.
