Cal Maritime Water Polo

CAL MARITIME v SAN JOSE STATE

 

In the first game of the (early:  750a) morning, Maritime faced off against San Jose State.  This marks the first year that the Spartans have participated in the CWPA.

 

The Keelhaulers raced out to a 4-1 lead in the first period against an outmanned and overmatched SJSU.  CMA stretched the lead to 8-3 at the half, and 12-4 at the end of the third.  The Spartans staged a comeback effort in the fourth quarter, scoring five goals, but it wasn’t enough, as CMA won the game  by six, 14-8.

 

So Nic Beene led the Keelhaulers with 5 goals.  Fr Bryan Zitren added three goals, and So Phil Spann added 2.  Fr Kristen Swader, Sr Cole Van Gundy, So Peter Gillette, Sr Fletcher McCue, and So Adron Beene added one goal apiece in a total team effort.  Sr Goalie Blake Amon made 9 saves.

CAL MARITIME v #9 FRESNO STATE

 

In the day’s second contest for Maritime, the Keelhaulers faced #9 ranked Fresno State Bulldogs.  The Bulldogs have consistently been one of the best teams in the PCC, and are regularly ranked in the national polls.

 

The game was close throughout, as the Keelhaulers jumped to a surprising 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter on goals by Fr Bryan Zitren and So Peter Gillette.  Fresno State came back to tie the score at 3 at the half, and went ahead 7-4 at the end of the third quarter.  However, Maritime stormed back on goals by Sr Cole Van Gundy and So Nic Beene to close the score to 7-6 Fresno with 1:40 left in the game.  Unfortunately, Fresno scored 40 seconds later to extend their lead to 8-6, and Maritime was unable to score in the last minute, as the Bulldogs held on to win 8-6.

 

Maritime was led by it’s pressure defense, and another outstanding game by Goalie Blake Amon, who recorded 12 saves.  Five Keelhaulers accounted for the scoring, with Cole Van Gundy, Peter Gillette, Nic Beene, and Adron Beene scored one each.  Fr Bryan Zitren scored two goals.

OTHER GAME RESULTS:

 

In the upset of the day, Chico State, ranked last in the conference, knocked off #5-ranked St Mary’s (CA) by a score of 8-6.
