Cal Maritime Water Polo

Vallejo, CA:  Cal Maritime started day two of the Pacific Coast Conference Northern Regional with a  game against Chico State.  Chico was coming off the upset of the tournament with a win on Saturday against previously ranked St Mary’s of Moraga.

 

The game was a struggle from the start, with CMA taking an early 4-3 lead after the first quarter.  The Wildcats came back to outscore the Keelhaulers 3-1 in the second quarter to take a 6-5 lead at halftime.

 

CMA kicked up their effort in the third quarter as they outscored Chico 4-0 to take a 9-6 lead after three.  Maritime went on to add two more goals to extend their lead to 11-6, and Chico was only able to add one more goal in the quarter, dropping the game to Cal Maritime 11-7.

 

The Maritime offense was led by Fr Bryan Zitren with 6 goals.  Sr Fletcher McCue and So Nic Beene added two each, and So Phil Spann added the final goal.

 

Goalie Blake Amon had 15 saves.

In the second game, CMA faced off against UC Davis, ranked #18 in the National Top 20 poll.  The Keelhaulers raced to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on two goals by Phil Spann.  The Aggies stormed back in the second quarter, outscoring CMA 4-2 to tie the game at 4 at the half.  Davis pushed the score to 6-4 before So Nic Beene scored with 12 seconds left in the quarter, to close the gap to 6-5.  Fr Bryan Zitren scored in the first minute of the fourth quarter to knot the game at 6.    The Aggies then scored twice in a minute to move back ahead by the score of 8-6.  So Nic Beene and So Adron Beene scored back to back goals for Maritime to tie the game again at 8 with two minutes to go.  Davis managed to score with a minute left to go ahead 9-8.  After a timeout, the Keelhaulers had two excellent opportunities to tie the game, getting off two quality shots right in front of the cage.  Unfortunately they were unable to convert, and Davis went on to win the game 9-8.
