Cal Maritime Water Polo

Villanova, PA:  Cal Maritime dropped a pair of heartbreakers today at the Villanova Invitational, losing to NCAA Division I team Fordham 10-8 in the morning, and falling to host Villanova 14-13 in the afternoon game.  The Keelhaulers will face the University of Pennsylvania Quakers in the 5th place game on Sunday morning.

In the first game, the Rams and Keelhaulers played a tight game back and forth the entire match, neither team able to pull away from the other.  Fordham led 4-3 after the first quarter, and the game was tied at 6 at halftime.  The Rams managed to take a 10-7 lead after three, but the Keelhaulers managed to shut them down the rest of the way.  Unfortunately, CMA managed only one goal in the fourth, dropping the game 10-8.  “The game was quite physical and very intense from start to finish.  Even though we came up short, it was probably the best game that we have played in the four years that I have been at CMA,” claimed Coach Timm Torchiana.  “The team gave everything they had in the game.”  Jr Evan Markstrum again lead all CMA scorers with three goals, and Cole Van Gundy, Lynn Langdon, Fletcher McCue, Nick Beene, and Adron Beene tallied one each.  Sr Goalie Blake Amon played a great game in the cage for the Keelhaulers.

After a very short rest, CMA returned to the pool to face host Villanova.  The Wildcats stormed to a 5-2 lead in the first period, before the Keelhaulers managed to get back into the game.  CMA outscored Villanova 5-1 in the second quarter to take a 7-6 lead at halftime.  “We were just flat in the first quarter.  I think that we were just physically and emotionally exhausted after the Fordham game, and it took some time to get going again,” according to Coach Torchiana.  Villanova came back to tie the game at 10 after 3, and managed to outscore Maritime 4-3 in the last quarter to win 14-13.  “By the end of the game, we were just running on empty tanks.”  Still, Coach Torchiana was very pleased with the effort; “In the past couple of seasons, we would have folded in those situations, but today we didn’t back down at all. Fordham was very physical, and in the past that would have been a problem for us.  I think that we finally figured out how to play to win today.”

Jr Evan Markstrum scored 6 for the Keelhaulers, with Jeff Balistreri tossing in two, and Kristen Swader, Cole Van Gundy, Lynn Langdon, Nick Beene, and Adron Beene scoring one each.  Sr Blake Amon had another strong game in the nets for CMA.  According to one coach, Amon is clearly the best goalie at the tournament.

NOTES:  Could it be home cooking?  In the Villanova game, Villanova had 13 man advantages (20 second power plays) to one for Cal Maritime…..Villanova coach Dan Sheridan is also Commissioner of the Collegiate Water Polo Association…..Sheridan indicated that in his mind, CMA was clearly a National Top 20 team, perhaps better than most teams on the East Coast…..after tomorrow’s game, CMA heads to Pasadena next week for the Cal Tech Classic.
