Villanova, PA: Recovering
nicely after two tough, emotional games
yesterday, Cal Maritime defeated the University
of Pennsylvania Quakers 11-4 today in the fifth
place game at the Villanova University Wildcat
Invitational. Penn came into the game ranked 12th
in the nation.
“This was a great
team-building trip for Maritime. We came in not
knowing what to expect, and we came up three
goals short of playing in the championship
game,” stated CMA coach Timm Torchiana. “We
really responded well today, after playing out
hearts out yesterday. I’m very proud of what
we’ve accomplished with this trip.”
The outcome was never in
doubt, as CMA took a 4-2 lead after one, and led
at halftime 7-3. The Keelhaulers went on to
outscore the Quakers 4-1 in the second half, for
a 11-4 win. As with the first three games, Jr
Evan Markstrum led the scoring with 6 goals.
Soph. Nick Beene tossed in two, and Cole Van
Gundy, Peter Gillette, and Fletcher McCue added
one each. Sr goalie Blake Amon had 9 saves.
“Clearly, we had the top
offensive player in the tournament with Evan,
who scored 21 goals in four games this week-end,
and also the top goalie with Blake stopping
almost everything. Those guys really made a
difference for us this week-end,” according to
Coach Torchiana.
