Cal Maritime Water Polo

In the first game, Maritime faced the University of California Wildcats, the #2 ranked team in the nation.  As has been the case for the Keelhaulers this season, the game was close throughout.  The Wildcats took at 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and extended their lead to 4-1 at the half.  CMA fought back to get in back in the game, trailing 7-4 at the end of three quarters.  Unfortunately, Maritime could get no closer, dropping the game by a score of 9-5.  “I think we showed the depth of the Pacific Coast Conference today.  We are the sixth ranked team in the PCC, and we kept the pressure on Arizona the entire game.  They never got a chance to play their bench, leaving the starters in the entire game.  That’s a great compliment to our program,” claimed CMA coach Timm Torchiana.

So Phil Spann led the Keelhaulers with two goals, and Sr Cole Van Gundy, Fr Bryan Zitren, and So Nic Beene filled out the scoring with one each.  Sr Blake Amon continued his career season with 9 saves.

In the second game of the day, CMA faced the University of Washington Huskies.  UW is ranked 1st in the Pacific Northwest Conference, and have been ranked as high as 11th in the national polls this season.

Showing a new resiliency and confidence, CMA took a commanding lead in this game, racing out to a 3-1 lead after one, on two goals by Fr Bryan Zitren and one by So Phil Spann.   The Keelhaulers led 6-2 at the half, and put the game away in the third, burying the Huskies by outscoring them 4-1 in the third to take a commanding 10-3 lead.  In the fourth, the Huskies managed to score a few goals against the Maritime subs, but CMA held on to win the game 11-7.

Phil Spann and Bryan Zitren led the Keelhaulers with three goals apiece, and Fr Joe Mahach, Nic Beene, Sr Fletcher McCue, Sr Cole Van Gundy, and So Adron Beene added one each.  Blake Amon tallied 12 saves, including three beautiful point-blank shots that had the crowd cheering.
