Led by All-Tournament First
Team selection Blake Amon in the goal, the
Keelhaulers played stifling defense today,
completely shutting down the high-powered Aggie
offense. Amon came up with several big saves
throughout the game, including four saves in the
first quarter that ended in a 0-0 tie. The
Aggies managed to score twice in the second
period, taking a 2-0 lead after the first three
minutes. The Keelhaulers closed the gap on a
goal by Sr Cole Van Gundy as the second quarter
ended in a score of 2-1. It turned out that
those two goals by the Aggies would be their
only scoring on the afternoon. The Keelhaulers
continued to play tenacious defense in the
second half, with Amon making one big save after
another. Soph Phil Spann tied the score at 2
with a goal at the 4:21 mark in the third
quarter. The game remained tied well into the
fourth quarter, with both teams failing to
convert on excellent scoring chances. Finally,
with 26 seconds to go in regulation, Soph Adron
Beene took a pass from his brother Nic down low
by the goal line, and fighting off his defender,
Beene pumped twice to move the goalie before
hitting the back of the net with the game
winner. “This was easily our best game of the
season. We have been playing well most of the
year, only to come up short time and again in
close games. We’ve talked all week about
finally winning a one point game, and today our
team was up to the task,” according to CMA Coach
Timm Torchiana. Added the coach, “Davis is
ranked #12 in the national poll, and this is a
big win for us. I’m particularly gratified that
Blake Amon was recognized for his great play
this week-end. I have no doubt that he is one
of the best goalies in the country this year.”
