Cal Maritime Rugby Alumni Return Home

(Vallejo, CA, Dec 12, 2009) – Cal Maritime Rugby welcomed home it’s Alumni on Saturday for the annual Alumni game. The Alumni proved too strong for the current class to win 29-11.

Atheltic Director Marv Christopher said “This game has become a staple on our calendar and it means a great deal to see the alumni return to the campus and show their pride at representing the rugby team.”

During the first half, hooker Dave Bennett (’09) opened the scoring for the alumni with Mike Schindler (’07) added another. Casey Helget (’08) added the conversion.

Cal Maritime scored two penalties through Rufus Walker and Mickey Hawke to make the half time score 12-6 to the alumni.

During the second half, the Alumni stretched their lead further  with tries from Bobbie Rather (’09), Kevin Randel and Mike Schindler adding his second. Casey Helget added another conversion.

Kirk Mueller added a try for the current Keelhaulers but the game was already lost.

“The alumni came to play today and were certainly looking to avenge their past defeats against us”, said coach Edward Roberts. “It’s fantastic to see so many past players return and arrive with a smile on their face that stays throughout the game and into the night. ”

The day concluded with an alumni dinner and auction to help raise funds for Cal Maritime Rugby. Coach Roberts added “We thank all the alumni, particularly Mike Schindler and Robert Rhea for helping organize the dinner. It’s special that they are willing to host the current team and give back to the rugby team.”
