Cal Maritime Defeats Sierra College
(Vallejo, CA, January 23, 2009) – On a cold and wet Friday night Cal Maritime hosted the newly created rugby team from Sierra College in a friendly game and won 38-19.
Kevin Randel opened the scoring with center Kevin Hirsh scoring the next before Ryan Ruvald scored two tries for the Keelhaulers and Randel scored his second.
The half time score was 31-0 to the Keelhaulers. Cal Maritime substituted 13 players and the second half saw Sierra College dominate the game and score three strong tries. Steven Ouimet scored the only try for the Keelhaulers in the second half.
Sierra college are seeking entry into the Northern California league in 2010 and this year are playing as many friendly games as possible against colleges.
“Sierra College will be a good addition to our league”, said coach Edward Roberts. “They beat us in the second half and we committed far too many mistakes”.
The next game for Cal Maritime is against the San Jose State in their second league game on
Saturday Jan 31.
