Cal Maritime Earns Victory over Santa Clara
(Vallejo, CA, March 7, 2009) – Cal Maritime scored nine tries to defeat the second place team in the Northern California Division 2 by a score of 54-10. The win takes Cal Maritime to 5-0 for the season and sets up next weekend’s clash with Santa Rosa JC as the Keelhaulers chase their first ever un-defeated league season in the last game of the season.
Full back Gary Borrilez opened the scoring for the Keelhaulers from a turnover after a period of sustained attack by Santa Clara. Rookie wing Kevin Hawke scored next to extend Cal Maritime’s lead.
Santa Clara were awarded a penalty try just before half time before Cal Maritime scored a penalty through Rufus Walker to make the half time score 15-7.
Cal Maritime took control of the game early in the second half as tries from Steve Ouimet, Kevin Randel extended the lead.
Flanker Rufus Walker scored two tries before Steve Ouimet and Kevin Hawke both scored their second try of the game.
Santa Clara scored from a 38 yard penalty that bounced off the crossbar.
Cal Maritime’s Dave Bennett crossed the line to seal a memorable victory.
Rufus Walker also kicked three conversions.
“We played some solid rugby today in the second half. Santa Clara are a difficult team to play and they certainly put us under pressure in the first half”, said coach Edward Roberts.
The next game for Cal Maritime is against Santa Rosa Junior College in the final league game of the season on Saturday March 14.
