Cal Maritime Fells Humboldt’s LumberJacks
(Arcata, CA, Feb 28, 2009) – Cal Maritime travelled to Arcata and scored six tries to defeat Humboldt State by a score of 36-12. The win was the first time the Keelhaulers have won in Arcata and takes Cal Maritime to 4-0 in league play.
Kevin Randel scored the first try of the game on the way to a personal hat-trick for the Keelhaulers in a strong display of skill. Steve Ouimet scored the second try in the first half which saw Cal Maritime camped in the Humboldt half for 30 minutes. Humboldt came back strongly before half-time with some fluid attacks.
The half time score was 12-0 to Cal Maritime after a bruising and physical first half.
Humboldt State scored quickly in the second half to make the score 12-7 before Kevin Randel scored his second of the day down the sideline. His third came from a well executed move from a scrum. Flanker Anthony Burris scored next before Humboldt scored their second. Captain Chris Flannery scored the final try to seal the memorable victory.
Rufus Walker also kicked three conversions.
“It’s always a tough place to come and play and we had to fight for every yard today”, said coach Edward Roberts. “Humboldt are a hard physical side and to finally win up here means a great deal to our team”.
The next game for Cal Maritime is against Santa Clara University in a league game on Saturday March 7.
