Cal Maritime Sails Past UC Santa Cruz
(Vallejo, CA, January 17, 2009) – In their first league game of the season, the Cal Maritime rugby team scored twelve tries on their way to a comprehensive defeat of the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz by 70-5.
Cal Maritime scored five tries in the first half through Kirk Mueller, David Vander Hoek, Ryan Ruvald, Rufus Walker and Ramsey Brown. Rufus Walker added two conversions.
The half time score was 29-0 to the Keelhaulers.
After a few half time adjustments, Cal Maritime scored seven more tries through Kevin Randel, Chris Flannery, Steven Ouimet, Grant Ginilo, before Mueller, Ruvald and Randel each scored their second try of the game before Santa Cruz scored their only score of the game 90 seconds from the end of the game.
The game was played under warm sunny conditions and leaves Cal Maritime with record of 1-0 while Santa Cruz are 0-2 after losing to Santa Clara last week.
“It was good to see us play well overall”, said coach Edward Roberts. “Our forwards showed a good improvement but we still have some work to do on our conditioning. The team were tired at the end and seemed to lose concentration”.
The next game for Cal Maritime is when they host Sierra College on Jan 23, 2009 in a friendly game.
