Cal Maritime Shows San Jose the Way

(Vallejo, CA, January 31, 2009) – On a perfect warm sunny day the Cal Maritime rugby team scored fourteen tries to defeat the Spartans of San Jose State by 78-5.

David Vander Hoek scored the opening try as the Keelhaulers scored eight tries in the first half. Both Ryan Ruvald and Kirk Mueller scored a hat-trick each in the first half.

Number 8 Steven Ouimet scored the other try as Cal Maritime created a 44-0 half time score.

Kevin Randel scored quickly in the second half and freshman Grant Ginilo scored his second try in two games. Kevin Hirsh scored two tries in the second half before wing Kirk Mueller scored his fourth try of the game.

San Jose scored their only try with two minutes remaining before Cal Maritime scored when Ouimet crossed the line for the second time from a pushover scrum to conclude the game.

This result takes Cal Maritime to 2-0 in the Northern California D2 Standings.

“San Jose are very physical and had some quality athletes”, said coach Edward Roberts. “Our forwards gave us the advantage in the tight exchanges but our work at the contact area needs more efficiency”.

The next game for Cal Maritime is against the top college team in the country when they host UC Berkeley in a friendly on Thursday Feb 5.
