Cal Maritime Victorious over Santa Rosa JC
(Vallejo, March 14, 2009) – Cal Maritime scored six tries against Santa Rosa JC to conclude the regular season with a 43-5 win. The result means the Keelhaulers win the Northern California Division 2 title following an undefeated league season.
Senior Kyle Hirsh opened the scoring with a try before Rufus Walker kicked a penalty. Ryan Ruvald scored next in his first game back from injury and full-back Gary Borrilez finished a strong passage of multi phase play to score near the posts.
Bobby Rather scored next before Ken Boothby closed out the half with a try.
With the half time score of 36-0 Cal Maritime made a number of substitutions during the second half.
Kevin Hawke scored early in the second half to extend the lead. Santa Rosa were rewarded with a try near the end of the game.
Rufus Walker also kicked five conversions.
“We didn’t really play very well and committed too many errors with the ball”, said coach Edward Roberts. “But we are glad to win the league for the first time in our history. But we know we have to play much more efficiently in the play-offs”.
