Cal Maritime Defeats USF
(San Francisco, CA, Feb 12, 2009) – Cal Maritime scored nine tries on the way to defeating the University of San Francisco by 55-13.
Under the lights at Negoesco Stadium, USF defended strongly in the first half to limit the Keelhaulers to two first half tries by Steven Ouimet and Rufus Walker, while scoring one themselves.
With the half time score at 14-5, Cal Maritime shook themselves and performed with more intensity to start second half.
Seven tries were scored during the second half through six different players. Kevin Randel scored first then Kevin Hirsh, David Vander Hoek and Bobby Rather added a try each. Freshman Paul Stetson scored his first try for the Keelhaulers, and Anthony Burris scored a brace of tries in a strong second half performance.
Rufus Walker also kicked five conversions out of seven attempts.
“Injuries made us change up the team this week and it showed”, said Coach Edward Roberts. “With four freshmen getting their first start, we knew we would have to battle to impose our pattern and USF certainly knocked us off our game plan tonight. Thankfully as we settled into the game, the players started to be more effective”.
The next game for Cal Maritime is against Diablo Valley U23’s in a friendly game on Saturday Feb 21
