Cal Maritime Opens Pre-season by Defeating UC Davis
(Vallejo, CA, Nov 6, 2009) – Cal Maritime in their first pre-season outing of the year held Division 1 rugby team UC Davis scoreless. The Keelhaulers scored three unanswered tries on their way to the 17-0 victory under the Friday night lights at Bodnar Field.
In wet conditions, wing Kirk Mueller started the season strongly scoring two powerful tries as Cal Maritime went ahead 10-0 at the interval.
Reflecting the pre-season nature of the game, both sides changed personnel frequently.
In the second half Cal Maritime defended for long periods before freshman Jack Schindler scored his first try for the Keelhaulers. Rufus Walker added the conversion.
In the reserve grade game, Cal Maritime defeated UC Davis again by a score of 22-7 with tries from Kevin Raff, Stephen Lang, Ramsey Brown and Colby Grobschmit.
“As a first run out, we were technically lacking, but it was good to see the new athletes play the game and show so much enthusiasm and team spirit”, said Coach Edward Roberts. “It’s good to challenge ourselves against Division 1 teams but there is a great deal of hard work ahead of us if we are to improve”.
The next game for Cal Maritime is against Santa Rosa JC in a friendly game on Saturday Nov 14.
