Cal Maritime Decisive Against Santa Cruz
(Santa Cruz – January 30, 2010) – A strong second half display from Cal Maritime and 23 points from Captain Rufus Walker saw the Keelhaulers overcome a physical Santa Cruz team by a score of 48-8.
The first half was a hard hitting affair with both teams trying to gain yards the hard way. Kirk Mueller opened the score with a good try from a turnover. Rufus Walker increased the lead with a penalty to make the half-time score 8-3.
Cal Maritime scored quickly at the beginning in the second half from a line out that led to Walker crossing for his first try. His second was scored shortly afterwards in the same spot from another well worked lineout.
Center Paul Stetson scored two tries from strong breaks in the midfield and Grant Ginilo also crossed following a period of sustained forward drives. Ryan Harrison crossed the tryline near the end of the game. Rufus Walker added five conversions.
“We struggled into the wind in the first half and we made too many errors at the contact area,” said Coach Edward Roberts “But the second half saw us clean up the contact area with more efficiency”.
The win takes Cal Maritime to 2-0 on the league.
Cal Maritime next play University of Nevada, Reno on Feb 6.
