Cal Maritime Overpowers UN Reno
(Vallejo – February 6, 2010) – On a wet, muddy field Cal Maritime defeated University of Nevada, Reno by 26-3. Reno, who were relegated from D1 last year, were playing their second game in D2.
In an powerful forward display, the Keelhaulers controlled both scrum and lineout to create three scoring opportunities in the first half to go up 19-0 at half time.
The opening try by Blake Cowan came from a fine individual run and the second from a powerful driving lineout for Rufus Walker. The third try was by full back Gary Borrilez who chased up a good up and under to score under the posts.
In the second half Rufus Walker scored another try and also added three out of four conversions.
“The field was a mess and the game was more of a reflection of the field than the teams,” said Coach Edward Roberts “But we learned some lessons today about how to play in wet, muddy conditions”.
The win takes Cal Maritime to 3-0 on the league.
(Vallejo - February 7, 2010) - Due to field conditions in Vallejo, the game against the Cal Bears will be played at Witter Field in Berkeley on Wednesday February 10, 2010. The kick-off has also been moved forward to 4pm.
