(Vallejo, CA, November 21, 2008) – Cal Maritime hosted Stanford’s First XV and led for 78 minutes before an interception try by Stanford saw the Division 1 team win by 10-8. The game
was the first of the season for the Keelhaulers but saw two evenly matched teams play a hard fought game.
With no score for almost 30 minutes, Cal Maritime broke the deadlock with a try from Number 8 Steven Ouimet.
At half time the score was only 5-0 to the Keelhaulers.
During the second half, Rufus Walker scored a penalty for Cal Maritime before Stanford
scored a try around the side of a ruck.
As the clock was winding down, Cal Maritime attempted an attack from inside their own 22
to find the ball intercepted and Stanford scored the winner.
“It was our first game of the season and we looked rusty. We now know we have to work
on our lineout, our scrum and our contact skills. Stanford caused us some problems in those
areas”, said coach Edward Roberts. “Composure under pressure is vital against the D1 schools.
We didn’t quite manage to hold on. But we will improve”.
The Keelhaulers face D2 opponents Santa Rosa JC on Dec 5, 2008.
