Cal Maritime Loses Thriller to Stanford

(Palo Alto, CA, Dec 5, 2009) – Cal Maritime scored three tries against Division 1 Stanford but ended up losing 22-19 after conceding a penalty in the closing minutes of an exciting pre-season game.

First year player Black Cowan scored the opening try for Cal Maritime following a powerful run through two Stanford defenders.

Kirk Mueller scored a superb individual try from the halfway line beating five defenders on his way to a memorable try. Rufus Walker added both conversions.

At half time the score was 19-14 to Stanford as both teams attacked from all areas of the field.

Kevin Hawke scored to tie the scores at 19-19 as the game moved into the final quarter.

As both teams looked for the victory, Stanford were awarded a kickable penalty in front of the posts and kicked it perfectly to earn the win.

“It was our first game visiting Stanford and we are still learning a great deal,” said coach Edward Roberts. “Both teams played some exciting rugby and we are disappointed to lose on a penalty”.

In the reserve grade game, Cal Maritime defeated Stanford 10-5 with tries from Kyle Lewis and Matt Iunker.
