Cal Maritime Opens
Pre-season by defeating
USF Dons
(Vallejo, Nov
16, 2007)
–
Cal Maritime wing
Kirk Muellerscored
two tries in the opening
pre-season rugby game
against the University
of San Francisco. Under
the Friday night lights
in Vallejo, the
Keelhaulers scored four
tries on their way to
earning the 24-5
victory.
Cal Maritime started
quickly, scoring from
the first scrum of the
game when David
VanderHoek set-up wing
John Skoda to dive over
in the corner.
VanderHoek scored soon
afterwards by seeing a
gap on the side of a
ruck to go over the
try-line from close
range. Center Chris
Rathbun kicked the two
point conversion.
USF came back and scored
their only try before
half time after a period
of sustained attack.
With the half-time score
of 12-5, the game was
still evenly balanced.
Kirk Mueller scored his
first try from a strong
run after breaking
tackles close to the
line. The Keelhaulers
next score came from
Mueller's quick thinking
when he reacted to a
turnover ball to score
his second try. Nate
Housman added the
conversion.
“We
scored four tries which
is positive but we have
a great deal of work to
do on the tackle area,"
said coach Edward
Roberts. "The
enthusiasm and
dedication of the
players is clear to see
but we need to be more
efficient with the ball
and execute the way we
want to play.”
Cal Maritime host Stanford
