Game Reports
Inter-squad
Game – Sun Nov 6, 2005
Gold 39 – Blue 17
The first game of the year concluded this season’s
rugby camp. Cal Maritime’s first game of the year
began with an inter-squad scrimmage where both teams
played entertaining running rugby that showcased
good athleticism and lines of running. The ball
handling skills showed the talent of the entire
squad. While the result may appear one sided, the
Blue team came back once they understood the
importance of winning possession through the
forwards. The season is underway. The next game
awaits.
MVP’s – Chris Rathbun, Ramsey Brown.

GOLD 39 – Blue 17 Referee: Joe Leisek
The annual two-day Keelhaulers development camp
concludes with a Sunday scrimmage. The referee was
returning for his second consecutive camp event,
which has become a highlight of his fall rugby. With
the team's first pre-season match looming on
Wednesday, there was possibly a little more urgency
in this year's scrimmage. Whatever the case, the
players proved much more skilled and cohesive than
one might think at this stage. The day was
structured in three 30-minute periods. In the first
period, coach Edward Roberts and his assistants were
on the field, talking to the players during play and
during stoppages. The referee quickly explained his
calls to the players, especially to offenders. This
program continued in the second frame, but with a
little less coaching. In the third period, it was
"game on." The players are keen, fit, and fast. Gold
set the pace in the first two periods but Blue
roared back in the last frame with three tries. It
was a great run.
