(Vallejo, Feb
6, 2008)– On
a wet
and muddy field,
Cal Maritime
welcomed rugby's
collegiate national
champions to Vallejo
and were given a
lesson in power and
pace. UC Berkeley
scored eight tries
on the way to a 55-0
victory.
Cal Maritime started
the game strongly
and a promising
drive from a lineout
took the ball deep
into the Bears half.
The attack was soon
stopped which forced
the Keelhaulers to
begin an impressive
defensive stand
which lasted 12
minutes before the
first Cal try was
scored.
Defense was the
order of the day as
Cal Maritime fought
hard to keep the Cal
Bears from crossing
the try-line. Cal
Maritime created two
opportunities to
score but poor
execution of passing
led to the half time
score of 26-0.
This friendly game
was an extra
challenge for the
Keelhaulers before
they resume their
league schedule in
ten days time.
“You
could see the
difference in pace
and power that is
required to compete,"
said coach Edward
Roberts. "While our
defensive shape was
reasonable,
we struggled by
having to commit
more than one player
to each tackle.”
