Lose to the
Slugs in a
Thriller
(Santa Cruz, Feb
11, 2006) – UC
Santa Cruz
mounted a strong
second half
comeback to
defeat
the Keelhaulers
by a score of
26-19 in a
thrilling game
of rugby. With
the lead
constantly
changing
hands
throughout, both
teams played
open attacking
rugby in an
evenly contested
game.
The Santa Cruz
Slugs scored
first after a
period of
sustained
pressure on the
Cal Maritime try
line
before scrum
half,
David Kopra,
responded with a
try under the
posts to even
the scores.
Santa Cruz
responded
quickly with a
try to take the
lead before
Maritime wing,
Steve Kuzmanic,
replied by
scoring in the
corner after a
strong period of
play.
The Keelhaulers
scored again
before half time
when prop
Michael
Schindler
beat three
defenders
to score under
the posts.
With the half
time score of
19-12 in Cal
Maritime’s
favor, the game
was finely
balanced. The
second half saw
end to end
action as both
teams attacked
from all areas
of the field.
Santa Cruz
scored two tries
to take the
victory.
“It’s hard to
lose such a
close game but
all credit to
Santa Cruz, they
defended very
well”, said
Coach Edward
Roberts. “We
created many
chances to score
in the second
half but were
held up
five times on
their try line.
Today we didn’t
score from all
our
opportunities,
but we will
improve.”

before scoring
another later in
the game.
