November 13, 2004 -
Pre-Season Game - Cal Maritime 20 v University of the
Pacific 8
In the first game against another school, this was an
encouraging start.
Everyone played at least 30 minutes and many players
looked more
comfortable on the field and an understanding of the
game is starting to
become evident. Two tries from scrums by Tim Clearwater
were created by
good work in the front row. And the wingers Kyle Jones
and Matt Shotwell both
made strong runs to create a try a piece. The tackling
was wholehearted and
many players made good breaks.
*Tries - Clearwater (2), Shotwell, Jones
*MVP’s – Chris Kopra and Andrew Spoonemore

CAL MARITIME 20 – Univ. of the Pacific 8
Referee: Chris Parkhouse
Maritime had about 35 players and UOP 20. They played
three 25 minute
quarters so that they could get a good rotation through
the squad. The score in
total was Maritime 20 UOP 8. The UOP team considering
they had a mixture of
first and second year players put up a good performance.
Maritime did not
make the best of their opportunities making a number of
handling areas which
could have seen a much larger difference in score.
Maritime dominated the line
out and scrum just could not convert on the final
effort. Some staunch
defending by UOP also kept them at bay. It was a good
well contested match
and good fun to ref.
