Cal Maritime Defeated by #1 Team
in the Nation
(Berkeley, Jan 14, 2006) – In
their final pre-season game, Cal
Maritime visited the top rugby
team in the nation, UC Berkeley.
In wet and windy conditions, the
Cal Bears comfortably secured
the victory by a score of 60-5.
Cal Maritime did well to disrupt
Berkeley's set pieces throughout
the game but struggled overall
with the size and power of the
Bears at the breakdowns.
A strong performance by the
Keelhauler scrum allowed the
Maritime backs to score an
excellent try after 74
minutes. The try came from
first phase ball and saw a well
worked move by the backs put
Chris Rathbun away to score.
“While it was tough playing
against the best team in the
nation, we battled well and
never gave up,” said Head Coach
Edward Roberts. “We showed
improvement in our defensive
alignment but we still have to
be more accurate in our
execution.”
The Keelhaulers have completed
their most difficult pre-season
ever. “We played high quality
opposition and hopefully the
players have developed faster by
being exposed to more
accomplished teams”, commented
Coach Roberts.
Cal Maritime opens its season
against University of Pacific on
