Keelhaulers in a
Tale of Two
Halves Against
Diablo Gaels
(Vallejo, March
14, 2008) – Cal
Maritime hosted
the Diablo Gaels
U23’s team in a
mid-season
friendly on
Friday night.
The game saw ten
tries and the
lead change
hands many times
before Diablo
scored in injury
time to win a
thrilling
contest 37-29.
The Keelhaulers
started strongly
but Diablo were
the first to
score and take a
7-0 lead. Cal
Maritime then
exerted some
pressure and
John Skoda
scored after a
fine break from
Anthony Burris.
Immediately from
the kick-off
Lowell Belany
scored again for
the Keelhaulers
after chasing a
kick deep into
Gaels territory.
Steven Ouimet
finished off
some good
forward work to
score in the
corner and with
Casey Helget
making all three
conversions, Cal
Maritime went
into the break
leading 21-7.
The game saw the
Keelhaulers try
many new
combinations and
allowed most of
the squad some
valuable game
time.
The second half
saw some strong
runs from Diablo
Gaels’ deep
three.
Kevin Randell
scored for the
Keelhaulers
before the Gaels
clawed
themselves back
into the game
with five
minutes to go.
Drew Weir kicked
a penalty to
give Cal
Maritime the
league again
before an
interception try
to Diablo ended
the game deep in
injury time.
“The result was
disappointing
and we have some
work to do on
our defense”,
said coach
Edward Roberts.
“Diablo were a
powerful side
and we made some
mental errors in
the second
half”.
