Cal Maritime
Downed by
Golden Gate
(Vallejo,
Feb 18,
2006) – In a
test of Cal
Maritime’s
squad depth,
many players
were given
their first
ever start
in this
non-league
encounter
with San
Francisco
Golden
Gate’s
U23’s. In
the
end, in
wet and cold
conditions,
Cal Maritime
were
defeated
13-7 in a
physical and
combative
game.
San
Francisco
Golden Gate
started both
halves very
well and
opened the
scoring to
go up
by a
score of
13-0. The
Keelhaulers
fought back
with a good
try from
center
Andrew
Spoonemore
which was
converted by
fullback
Eric Piper.
The wet
weather made
free flowing
rugby
difficult
and both
teams
struggled to
impose a
pattern onto
the game.
“We have to
look beyond
the loss and
evaluate the
performance.
Many players
received
their
first starting opportunity
and really
stepped up a
level. We
are close to
having two
competitive
teams in our squad”, said
Coach Edward
Roberts.
“This game
was about
developing
more of
our inexperienced
players. As
a team we
are creating
opportunities
on the
field. With
continued
effort and
focus, there
are good
things about
to happen.”
