Cal Maritime Loses to SF Golden Gate U23’s in Pre-season
(Vallejo, Dec 2, 2006) – Cal Maritime traveled to its
first road game against SF Golden Gate U23’s on Treasure
Island and suffered a 60-12 defeat.
This pre-season game format comprised of three periods
of 30 minutes to allow both teams to experiment with new
combinations.
The first period was closely contested and the
Keelhaulers kept possession well and constructed their
first score from a strong scrum on the SFGG five meter
line. Rookie
Rufus Walker scored his second try in two games
after good scrimmaging from the Cal Maritime tight five.
SFGG responded with two tries to take the 14-5 lead
after the first period.
In the second period, with many new combinations on the
field, Cal Maritime struggled to maintain possession and
SFGG stormed to a 44-5 lead.
The final period saw Cal Maritime re-gain parity up
front and score another try through
Michael
Schindler which
Joel Bruce
converted but by this time the game was already lost.
“We played reasonably well in the first period but I
think our inexperience showed in the second period
before and the game had already got away from us as a
contest by then,” said coach Edward Roberts. “We clearly
have some work to do defensively and need to contest for
the ball with more aggression. This was a very different
type of game than the one we played last week against
Stanford and we need to take the lessons we were given
and work hard to learn from them.”
Cal Maritime’s next game is against Santa Rosa JC on Dec
8 in Vallejo.
Tries: Schindler, Walker.
Cons: Bruce.
