San Francisco Golden Gate U23’s Play First
Ever Game Against Cal Maritime Rugby
Vallejo, CA, (November 13, 2005) - Cal
Maritime Rugby hosted the first ever game
played by San Francisco Golden Gate U23’s.
In an evenly matched pre-season contest, SF
Golden Gate scored a try in the final five
minutes to seal the victory 29-33.
The newly created SF Golden Gate U23’s team
is comprised of players with strong rugby
experience who are looking to force their
way into the senior men’s team. SF Golden
Gate took an early lead of 18-10 at the end
of the first period with some physical play
and some powerful running.
In a close competitive game, Cal Maritime
played every squad member who gained
valuable pre-season game time. As SF Golden
Gate began to tire, the Keelhaulers took the
lead with 10 minutes to go, before the
experience of SF Golden Gate closed out the
game.
Two tries from flanker Tony Maude, took his
impressive pre-season total to three tries.
Center Sean Jenkins rounded off another good
game with his first ever try while Mike
Schindler and Allen Clark both scored well
taken tries.
“We are still learning the game as a team.
The new players are developing very well.”
said Coach Edward Roberts, “It was exciting
to see the players fight back to take the
lead near the end and scoring five tries is
always very encouraging. But we still have
some work to do on our contact skills and
set-pieces.”
The next pre-season game is away against
University of Pacific on Saturday November
19.
