Cal Maritime takes Lumberjacks to the Edge
(Vallejo, March 11, 2006) – Cal Maritime hosted Humboldt State, last years Division Two
National Championship runner-up, in a tense and competitive contest, but eventually were
defeated 12-7.
Playing their last league game, the Keelhaulers started strongly with a try after 90 seconds by
flanker Adrian Kearns from a quick break down the blindside of a ruck. The conversion from
center Sean Jenkins took the early score to 7-0.
Both teams attacked from all areas of the field and Humboldt tied the game up with a try
following a frantic kick and chase. The second Humboldt try was scored soon afterwards to
leave the half time score finely balanced at 12-7.
The second half saw major attacks launched by both teams, but both defenses held strong
conceding no points in the second half. The most promising attack by Cal Maritime saw wing
Phil Tabyanan tackled in the corner, just a few yards short of the try line.
The result concludes Cal Maritime’s 2006 league schedule. With a final record of 4-3, this is
the third consecutive year the Keelhaulers have enjoyed a winning season.
“We came out with intensity today and it showed. We continued to attack for the entire game
and the effort the players showed was superb. We just need to execute all the opportunities we
create”, said Coach Edward Roberts. “The loss is disappointing, but Humboldt State is ranked
as the second best team in the country, and we more than competed with them for the entire
game.”
This summer, the Keelhaulers will graduate four seniors; flanker Adrian Kearns, back Phil
Tabyanan, center Randall Garza, and number 8 Tony LaVella. All four players have helped
improve the team and
have been instrumental in developing the rugby program during the past
four years. During their
tenure, the team earned its first play-off appearance and went on their
first ever overseas tour.
Coach Roberts complemented the departing seniors saying, “They have developed from rugby
novices to accomplished players and will graduate as young men who enjoyed their rugby and
college experience. We wish them well in their careers and the next stage of their rugby development.”
The future of Cal Maritime rugby is already being planned. “We are always improving and it
won’t be long before Cal Maritime defeats some of the more established teams in our league,”
said coach Roberts.
