Cal Maritime felled by LumberJacks
(Arcata, March 3, 2007) – The Cal
Maritime rugby team traveled to Arcata
to play Humboldt State but fell to the
LumberJacks by a score of 36-5.
Dropped balls and turnovers were the
tune of the day as the physical Humboldt
team disrupted any pattern the
Keelhaulers attempted to play. The first
Humboldt scores came from a turnover and
an interception. The other try was a
well executed lineout followed by a 50
yard run to
score.
The game was lost by half-time as the
LumberJacks led 19-0.
During the second half, Cal Maritime
exerted some pressure and advanced the
ball down the
field and eventually center
Andrew Spoonemore scored the
Keelhaulers only points of the day.
“We had a good week of practice but our
team is relatively inexperienced against
streetwise teams and Humboldt took
control of the game from the opening
drive,” said coach Keelhauler Edward
Roberts. “We dropped too many balls and
missed tackles. It’s tough to build
momentum when we allowed those things to
happen. We’ll continue to work on our
skills to improve our performance.”
The result takes Cal Maritime to 2-1 for
the season.
Cal Maritime’s next game is on March 10
when they host UC Santa Cruz.
