(Vallejo, March 1,
2008) –David Vander
Hoek scored four
tries to help Cal
Maritime defeat
Humboldt State for
the first time in
their history by a
score of 51-17.
Playing into the
wind, Cal Maritime
controlled field
position to create
scoring
opportunities early
in the game with
Vander Hoek scoring
his first three
tries in the opening
15 minutes.
Jerry Ogg, with a
strong run past
three defenders,
scored the fourth
try of the half and
Rufus Walker kicked
the conversion to
post a half time
score of 22-3.
After the break, and
playing with the
wind behind their
backs, the
Keelhaulers moved
the point of attack
frequently and
maintained the
pressure on
Humboldt’s defensive
line.
Casey Helget
followed up a chip
through from Kirk
Mueller to score a
well deserved try.
John Skoda was again
on the score sheet
as he beat five
defenders to score
in his third
consecutive game.
Kirk Mueller
finished off a
strong passage of
play to close the
game out with
another try in the
corner.
The result takes Cal
Maritime to 3-1 for
the season.
“We played more
cohesively as a team
and it showed”, said
coach Edward
Roberts. “It’s not
often you see a
player score four
tries in a game,
David Vander Hoek
proved what a fine
prospect he is as
player.”
