(Vallejo, Feb
23, 2008) – On a
wet and windy
day, Cal
Maritime
travelled to
Santa Rosa
Junior College
and David Van
der Hoek scored
twice to help
the Keelhaulers
earn a hard
fought 22-0
victory.
Cal Maritime
playing with the
wind, scored
soon after
kick-off when
full back Casey
Helget was put
away to score
under the posts.
Rufus Walker
kicked the
conversion.
David Van der
Hoek scored the
try of the game
when he ran from
50 yards out to
beat four Santa
Rosa defenders.
With a 12-0 lead
at half time,
the Keelhaulers
changed tactics
as they faced
the strong wind
in the second
half.
Van der Hoek
score his second
from short range
before the final
try by John
Skoda ended the
game as a
contest with a
well taken try
from a scrum.
In a bizarre
twist, the game
was ended 10
minutes early by
the referee
after a yellow
card and
numerous
penalties for
foul play by
Santa Rosa. The
referee
considered that
the behavior of
the Santa Rosa
players was out
of control and
for safety
decided to call
the game early.
The result takes
Cal Maritime to
2-1 for the
season.
“We kept our
composure
throughout the
game which was
encouraging but
we didn’t exert
the power that
we have and we
need to fix
that," said
coach Edward
Roberts.
