Cal Maritime Defeats Santa Clara

(Santa Clara, Feb 4, 2006) – Cal Maritime scored five tries to win 27-15 in an exciting game against a big and physical Santa Clara team. With the half-time score tied at 10-10, the
Keelhaulers improved during the second half to secure the victory.

Santa Clara opened the scoring with an early try before Cal Maritime flanker Robert Rhea
replied with a fine individual run to score in the corner. Santa Clara scored next but the
Keelhaulers responded with a try by scrum half Phil Tabyanan after a good scrum and offload
by Tony LaVella.

After the break, Cal Maritime gained control of the game and good lineout work secured the possession which led to an excellent try from a fine 50 yard run by Tony LaVella. Full back
Chris Rathbun scored from a scrum and wing Steve Kuzmanic sealed the victory with a late try.

“We played some good rugby today and the tries were created by players expressing themselves
in a very positive manner,” said Coach Edward Roberts. “We still need to be more composed
with the ball to take advantage of all the scoring opportunities we create.”

Cal Maritime travels to UC Santa Cruz on Saturday February 11, 2006 to play their third league game of the season.

Tries: Rhea, Tabyanan, LaVella, Rathbun, Kuzmanic.
Cons: Rathbun.

Second Team Secures Energetic Victory over Santa Clara

Cal Maritime’s 2nd team also defeated Santa Clara 2nd team by a score of 12-5. Playing an abbreviated 10-a-side game, Cal Maritime looked very lively and passed the ball well to score
two tries.

The first try was scored by scrum half, Michael Orozco, playing his first game after a serious
injury. The other try by exciting prop Tyler Jensen was converted by full back, Eric Piper.

“All the players in the squad are playing well. It’s exciting that the 2nd team are showing a competitive desire to play,” said Coach Roberts. “By having a talented squad we are hoping to
be able to continue to perform strongly as the season develops”.

Tries: Orozco, Jensen
Cons: Piper
