(Santa Clara, Feb 4,
2006) – Cal Maritime
scored five tries to win
27-15 in an exciting
game against a big and
physical Santa Clara
team. With the half-time
score tied at 10-10, the
Keelhaulers improved
during the second half
to secure the victory.
Santa Clara opened the
scoring with an early
try before Cal Maritime
flanker
Robert Rhea
replied with a fine
individual run to score
in the corner. Santa
Clara scored next but
the
Keelhaulers responded
with a try by scrum half
Phil Tabyanan after
a good scrum and offload
by
Tony LaVella.
After the break, Cal
Maritime gained control
of the game and good
lineout work secured the
possession which led to
an excellent try from a
fine 50 yard run by Tony
LaVella. Full back
Chris Rathbun scored
from a scrum and wing
Steve Kuzmanic
sealed the victory with
a late try.
“We
played some good rugby
today and the tries were
created by players
expressing themselves
in a very positive
manner,” said Coach
Edward Roberts. “We
still need to be more
composed
with the ball to take
advantage of all the
scoring opportunities we
create.”
Cal
Maritime travels to UC
Santa Cruz on Saturday
February 11, 2006 to
play their third league
game of the season.

Energetic Victory over

team also defeated Santa
Clara 2nd
team by a score of 12-5.
Playing an abbreviated
10-a-side game, Cal
Maritime looked very
lively and passed the
ball well to score
two tries.
The
first try was scored by
scrum half,
Michael Orozco,
playing his first game
after a serious
injury. The other try by
exciting prop
Tyler Jensen was
converted by full back,
Eric Piper.
“All the players in the
squad are playing well.
It’s exciting that the 2nd
team are showing a
competitive desire to
play,” said Coach
Roberts. “By having a
talented squad we are
hoping to
be able to continue to
perform strongly as the
season develops”.
