Cal Maritime Ends Regular
Season with Big Victory over
San Jose State
(San Jose, March 24, 2007) –
Cal Maritime traveled to San
Jose State in search of
bonus
points to keep their
play-off hopes alive and
scored fifteen tries on
their way to the 95-5
victory.
Senior
Joel Bruce opened the
scoring before captain and
fellow graduating senior
Michael Schindler scored
the second try.
Ten different Keelhauler
players scored tries with
Kyle Hirsh scoring his
first ever hat-trick
following some strong
running.
Bobby Rather,
David VanderHoek, and
Ramsey Brown each scored
a pair of tries.
Dave Bennett and senior
David Lawson scored
their first ever league
tries while
Andrew Spoonemore also
added a five pointer.
Rufus Walker built a
personal tally of 25 points
by making 10 of 15
conversions and scoring
another try for the
Keelhaulers.
The result means that Cal
Maritime await the results
of Santa Rosa’s final two
games to
determine who goes forward
to the play-offs.
Cal Maritime concludes the
regular season with a record
of 4-2.
“We gained the bonus point
and the players kept the
scoreboard ticking over”,
said coach Edward Roberts.
“The players were composed
and ended the season on a
high and considering our
relative in-experience they
should be very proud of the
way they played this year.”
Coach Roberts paid tribute
to the three graduating
seniors, “Joel Bruce,
Michael Schindler and Dave
Lawson have all provided
good service to Cal Maritime
Rugby and have helped us
build and improve the
program and we wish them
well in their future rugby
and maritime careers.
