(Vallejo, March 6,
2008) –With nine new
starters from the
team that defeated
Humboldt State five
days ago, Cal
Maritime scored
eleven tries to
defeat San Jose
State 63-0.
The Keelhaulers
started strongly
under the lights at
Bodnar Field and
quickly went up 17-0
after five minutes
with tries from Ryan
Ruvald, Matt Greely
and Anthony Burris.
Anthony Burris
capped off another
strong performance
by scoring four
tries, the second
Cal Maritime player
in two games to
achieve such a feat.
Kevin Randell also
scored a well taken
try
in the corner.
Cal Maritime was in
control of the game
leading 38-0 at half
time.
The second half was
more competitive
before tries from
Burris and Steven
Ouimet increased the
lead. The try of the
night came from
slick passing. Full
back Gary Borrillez
delivered the deft
pass under pressure
to put wing Lowell
Bellany away in the
corner.
Ryan Moore and Ken
Boothby finished the
game by scoring
their first tries
for the Keelhaulers.
The result takes Cal
Maritime to 4-1 for
the season.
“Our work at the
contact area was not
as powerful as we
would like”, said
coach Edward
Roberts. “But it was
pleasing to see the
squad step-up and
get the result. We
have players who are
competing for
starting spots.”
