(Santa Cruz, Ca., 16 Feb 2008) The
Cal Maritime Keelhaulers took on the
Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz
Saturday in a game that featured 2
very unique mascots. A recent
article featured by ESPN listed the
UC Santa Cruz Banana Slug as the
country’s most creative mascot and
Cal Maritime’s Keelhauler ranked #5.
The day belonged to the Keelhaulers
though, as Cal Maritime beat the
Slugs 59-10. The Keelhaulers shared
the scoring responsibilities as 8
different players crossed the try
line. 9 tries were scored in all.
Cal Maritime took a 24-10 lead into
halftime. The second half was all
Cal Maritime as the Keelhaulers
scored 35 unanswered points.
The forwards dominated with a strong
powerful attack. The back line did
a good job of kicking out of
pressure situations to keep the
Slugs out of the Cal Maritime half
for most of the game. “It was good
to see an improved performance and
to get a win after a couple of tough
losses”, said Head Coach Edward
Roberts.
The Keelhaulers will travel to Santa
Rosa for their next game to take on
Santa Rosa Jr. College. The game is
on Saturday, the 23rd of
February. Kick off is 1pm.
