Cal Maritime
Scores Eleven Tries to
Defeat
Stanford
(Vallejo, Nov
30, 2007) –
Rufus Walker and
David Vanderhoek
scored three tries
each in Cal
Maritime’s
comprehensive
pre-season victory
over Division 1
Stanford. Walker
earned a personal
tally of 19 points
as the Keelhaulers
defeated the
Cardinal’s 63 -5
in front of a big
crowd in Vallejo.
Both teams used the
game to rotate their
players during three
periods of 30
minutes.
Rufus Walker opened
the scoring showing
good support work,
before rookie Kevin
Randel scored his
first try for Cal
Maritime.
Soon afterwards,
Vanderhoek showed
his eye for a gap to
score his first of
the game.
John Skoda scored a
try from a
well-timed pass by
Casey Helget, before
Walker scored his
second of the night.
VanderHoek scored
his second as the
first period drew to
a close before
Walker scored his
third and final try.
With two conversions
from Chris Rathbun
and one from Walker,
the score after the
first 30 minute
period was 41-0 to
the Keelhaulers.
The second period of
30 minutes was
closer with a first
try from rookie Alex
Illium making the
score 46-0.
The final period saw
Cal Maritime score
three more tries
through Vanderhoek,
Kirk Mueller and
rookie Jerry Ogg
with a conversion by
Drew Weir. Stanford
breached the
Keelhaulers defense
to score their first
try of the night but
the game was over as
a contest at that
point.
“It’s good to see an
improved performance
from our previous
game, but we lost
our shape after the
first period," said
coach Edward
Roberts. "We are
developing a squad
of players and we
still have areas to
improve to gain
consistency in our
performance.”
