Cal Maritime defeats an energetic USF team
(San Francisco, February 17, 2007) – The Cal
Maritime rugby team went behind 7-0 early in
the first half against an enthusiastic USF
team before responding with 19 unanswered
points to secure the victory 19-7.
Played in perfect conditions on the turf
field in Negoesco stadium both teams played
open attacking rugby and USF scored first
from a well executed scrum move.
The Keelhaulers were slow to get into the
game and were saved from a half time deficit
by a strong run by captain
Mike Schindler
who scored under the USF post. With
Rufus
Walker kicking the conversion, the
Keelhaulers ended the half level at 7-7.
Cal Maritime regrouped at half time and
following a well organized defense,
Ramsey
Brown scored an interception try. The 60
yard run beating two defenders to score put
the Keelhaulers
n the lead for the first time.
A
few minutes later captain Mike Schindler
scored again with a strong run around the
side of a ruck which Rufus Walker again
converted.
“We were very flat to begin with but our
lineout and scrum functioned well,” said
coach Keelhauler Edward Roberts. “We did
some solid approach work but we made too
many unforced errors just as we looked like
scoring.”
The victory takes Cal Maritime to 2-0 for
the season.
Cal Maritime’s next game is on March 3 at
Humboldt State.
