Keelhaulers Defeat USF Dons

(Vallejo, March 28, 2008) – In the final league game of the season, Cal Maritime scored twelve tries to defeat the University of San Francisco by 66-5 on Friday night at Bodnar Field.

Cal Maritime started strongly with two quick tries from Kirk Mueller on his way to a team record five tries. Anthony Burris also scored three tries to increase his strong try scoring run in the last three games. The rest of the tries were scored by John Skoda, Luis Navarrete, Eric Piper and Andrew Spoonemore.

USF’s only try was a controversial penalty try for persistent offside at the ruck.

The result takes Cal Maritime to 5-1 for the season and confirms their qualification for play-off’s.

Seniors Casey Helget, Nate Housman, Tony Merlonghi, Luis Navarrete, Eric Piper, John Skoda, Andrew Spoonemore and Drew Weir celebrated their last home game for the Keelhaulers with the big win.

“The game was the last game for the seniors on Bodnar Field and they helped earn this victory through a dedication to hard work over the past four years”, said coach Edward Roberts. “We’re pleased to get into the play-offs and are looking forward to the challenge of post season play”.

The Keelhaulers now travel to Utah to play Utah Valley State in the first play-off game on Friday April 4, 2008.
