Cal Maritime Takes Consolation at Maritime Cup

Over the weekend of November 21 and 22 the Keelhaulers went 1 and 1 with a victory over The Coast Guard Academy and a loss to Evergreen State College in The Maritime Cup hosted by Cal Maritime.

On Friday night, behind a loud and excited crowd the Keelhaulers lost to a very athletic and well-coached Evergreen State College.  Cal Maritime was down 1 at half 32-31.  The Geoducks of Evergreen came out strong in the 2nd half and increased their lead to as many as 17.  The Keelhaulers cut it to 5 points with about 5 minutes to go but it was too much of a deficit to overcome, and the Keelhaulers lost opening night of the Maritime Cup 73-59.  The Keelhaulers were lead by Lauren Westbrook's 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks.  Westbrook was joined in double figures by Taylor Himmelspach (13 points and 6 assists) and Keniya Thurman (11 points and 7 rebounds).

The following night the Keelhaulers were matched up with The Coast Guard Academy.  The Keelhaulers jumped out early with 2 steals by Angela Goodall and 4 quick points by Lauren Westbrook.  Cal Maritime took a 23-17 lead into the half. The 2nd half was back and forth until The Coast Guard Academy took a 5 point lead mid way thru the 2nd half.  The Keelhaulers-- behind great team defense-- lead by Arielle Gatton in the post and a combination of Taylor Himmelspach and Keniya Thurman on the shooters worked their way back into the lead.  With a 1 point lead and the Keelhaulers having the ball Coast Guard Academy was forced to foul for the final minute of play.  Cherish Bustos knocked down 1 of 2 and then a steal and 2 free throws by Westbrook led to a 4 point victory for the Keelhaulers.  The Keelhaulers were once again led by Westbrook who put in 21 points and received all-tournament honors for her performance.  Angela Goodall and Keniya Thurman each chipped in 8 points.  Coach Covell stated "This was a great win for us.  We were able to do the little things tonight and play solid defense as a team.  The all-around defensive effort of the team was great."

The Keelhaulers hit the hardwood next at Holy Names University for their annual Thanksgiving Classic.  Cal Maritime opens with Azusa Pacific who are currently ranked 6th in the NAIA I.  The Keelhaulers will be back home on December 13 when they open conference play versus Dominican University at 5:30pm.
