Keelhauler Women Start Season 1 and 1

On Oct. 30th the Keelhaulers opened the season in Olympia Washington versus Evergreen State College.  The Keelhaulers shot an impressive 68% from behind the arch.  Cal Maritime lead by 18 with about 10 minutes left in the contest when Evergreen put together a stretch of solid defense and great shooting which brought the game to within 2 points with 35 seconds left.  The Keelhaulers needed a strong defensive stop which they got with a 30 second violation, and nailed 2 big free throws to seal the victory.  Cal Maritime won 63-59 behind the shooting of

Lauren Westbrook (22 points), Taylor Himmelspach (14 points) and

Alexsis Brown (12 points).  The Keelhaulers out rebounded Evergreen State by 12 and held them to only 5 offensive boards.  In the win the Keelhaulers may have lost shooting guard Kelly Stephens to a knee injury for the season.  Kelly is an outstanding shooter who transferred from Siskiyous College in Weed, CA.

On Oct. 31st the Keelhaulers found themselves out matched by a taller team in

Northwest University of Kirkland, WA.  The Keelhaulers battled for much of the first half but ran out of gas in the second where the Eagles of Northwest University extended the lead 94 to 64.  The Keelhaulers were lead by Taylor Himmelspach, (22 points) and

Lauren Westbrook (14).

The Keelhaulers are headed to the Holy Names Classic in Oakland this coming weekend. The Tournament opener with Fresno Pacific is Friday evening at 6pm and Southern Oregon on Saturday afternoon.
