Cal Maritime Crew
Davis
Invitational - March 4, 2007
The Cal Maritime crew team kicked off the spring
sprint season on Sunday at the Davis
Invitational in West Sacramento. Last year’s
regatta was cancelled after one race because of
weather conditions, but the weather and water
proved to be much better this year.
The Keelhaulers competed in four events – the
men’s novice eight, the men’s novice four A, the
men’s novice four B, and the men’s varsity four
– against crews from UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara,
Santa Clara University, and Sonoma State
University. And since eleven of the fifteen
athletes competing for CMA came into this year
without any previous crew experience, this was
their first taste of 2,000-meter racing. In the
men’s novice eight, the crew of Brian Gin
(coxswain), Chris Lemon, James Dumont, Mack
Sandison, Jake Lehner, Jon Daniel, Chris Beuret,
Andrew Kilgore, and Ryan Reiger had a strong
start, but clashed oars with another crew and
finished fifth in a time of 7:03.1. In the
men’s novice four A race, the crew of Mariko Abe
(coxswain), Chris Lemon, James Dumont, Chris
Beuret, and Jake Lehner led for the first 1000
meters, eventually finishing third in a time of
8:02.1. In the men’s varsity four, the
Keelhauler crew of Emily Ramos (coxswain), Jon
Daniel, Jake DeMello, Mack Sandison, and Mike
Hess had a strong race, finishing fourth in a
time of 7:55.9. Finally, in the men’s novice
four B race, the crew of Mariko Abe (coxswain),
George Garten, Andrew Kilgore, Nick Ridgway, and
Brian Gin finished fourth in a time of 9:14.5.
The Keelhaulers’
next regatta will be the Sacramento Invitational
at Lake Natoma on Saturday, March 10th.
